TEAM Isle of Wight’s Island Games table tennis squad may be a work in progress, but that will not deter them from giving everything to win a medal.

Six players will represent the Isle of Wight in July — a combination of youth and experience, with Simon Proffitt, 64, the oldest member, and Temeesha Hobbs, the youngest, at 17.

Team IW, sponsored by Isle of Wight estate agents Trigg and Co have won 22 gold medals since 1987.

The squad began to rebuild after the games in Gotland, Sweden, two years ago, and it is hoped the progression will continue in Gibraltar.

“We’ll be considered outsiders for a medal, but we’ll give it our absolute best,” said player-captain Dan Burns, a nine-time Island Games gold medallist.

George Downing, who has been playing professional table tennis abroad, is considered the Island’s most likely medal hopeful.

Alex Rorke and Anna Joyce, who have both enjoyed great seasons in the Island Premier League, make up the squad, who are in good form.
