YOUNG athletes from the Isle of Wight put in outstanding performances in the Hampshire Athletics Track and Field Championships — none more so than Ben Holdsworth, who was crowned county champion in dramatic style.

At the event held at Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Centre, which attracted leading athletes from across Hampshire, Ben won the U20 men’s pentathlon having amassed 2,637 points.

Second going in to the final event, the 1,500m, he won to leapfrog into first place to retain last year’s title.

Ben is now ranked in the top five nationally for U20 men’ s pentathlon.

In the U15 boys’ pentathlon, Jacob Patey came second (1,705pts), recording PBs in all five events: 80m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot putt and 800m.

There were also 3,000m and mile races on the day.

Jacob’s brother, Noah (U15), and Campbell Laird (U17) both took part in the 3,000m, while Maisey Kent and Naomi Holdsworth (both U15) and Mabel Lewis (U17) entered the mile race.

Naomi and Mabel both broke the IW Athletic Club records for their respective age-groups.

In the recent Quad Kids Championships in Portsmouth, Oliver Flood came sixth (198pts) in the U11 boys’ category.

Other Island youngsters who took part were Savannah Smith (eighth, 179pts), Maisie Gibson (11th, 173pts) and Amelia Groves (18th, 146pts).
