THE Island's MP today (Friday) described the Prime Minister's decision to resign as 'timely' — but said he did not know who he would support in the forthcoming leadership contest.

Earlier today Theresa May announced she will quit as Conservative leader on June 7, paving the way for a contest to decide the new Prime Minister.

In an emotional statement, she described her time in office as being 'the honour of my life.'

Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely said: "I think it was timely and the right thing in the circumstances."

Mr Seely has been a staunch supporter of Mrs May, voting for her Brexit withdrawal agreement earlier this year.

Mr Seely said: "We have a duty to support the leader."

He said his support for a new leader would depend on which candidate put forward the best manifesto — one that would re-establish the Conservative party.

However, he said his main focus was not the leadership contest, but Isle of Wight issues including the future of Venture Quays and the former Camp Hill prison.

He said: "I am not going to spend my life in some Westminster insiders' group."

UPDATE:

Bob Seely is lending his support to Michael Gove as the next leader of the Conservative party.
