THE swings at a Sandown playpark have been removed due to health and safety concerns.

The decision to close the swings at Battery Gardens, Sandown, was made following a routine health check and safety inspection carried out by the Isle of Wight Council.

The inspection was carried out today (Friday). The swings did not not meet the appropriate European safety standards for play equipment.

The council said its priority was the safety of children using the park.

A council spokesperson said: "We understand how important playparks are in the local community and for visitors.

"However, first and foremost, play equipment must be safe.

"The council will work to reopen the swings as soon as possible."

The rest of the park remains open.
