From Vincent Valvona, St Helens:

Island Roads’ decision to carry out a road crossing survey when The Sloop at Wootton Bridge was at its busiest was a complete and utter waste of time.

The Sloop certainly is busy on a Sunday lunchtime, like many family pubs, full of parents with young children taking advantage of the good food prices.

And most roads won’t be particularly busy at these times either, because people are having lunch. Island Roads would have known this, which is probably why they chose that time.

What Island Roads need to do is take surveys when the road is at its busiest — people use The Sloop at these times too.

That does ebb and flow, but is mostly determined by commuting and school-run traffic (such as the Friday afternoon of mum’s accident), traffic going to and disembarking from both the Wightlink ferry just around the corner, and also the Red Funnel ferry at East Cowes, as Wootton High Street is the main road from Ryde to East Cowes.

Hopefully a proper survey in the summer will be more informative and accurate.
