OSBORNE House will continue the bicentennial celebrations today (Friday) with an actual Victoria sponge — a lifesize replica of Queen Victoria made of cake.

As the figurative icing on the celebrations, English Heritage has unveiled the unique birthday cake to mark 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

The lifesize replica, standing at 4ft 11ins, is made from Victoria sponge — named after the Queen, who was known to enjoy a slice of the sponge cake with her afternoon tea.

It contains 298 eggs, 26kg of butter and 20kg of fondant.

The cake marks the opening of the new display of birthday gifts exchanged between Victoria and Price Albert at Osborne.

The cake was made by Peboryon, based in Cornwall.

Visitors are welcome to a free slice of the cake.
