FLEEING from police in a stolen vehicle resulted in prison time for a Bonchurch man.

Darren Rose, 28, of Shore Road, was involved in a police car chase on Tuesday, speeding through built up areas at 70 mph, before losing control on a corner and crashing into a fence.

Police put on their blue lights after spotting a car with false number plates on Newport Road, Lake.

The defendant initially pulled over, but then, as officers exited their vehicle, sped off in the opposite direction.

There was a high speed chase along Alverstone Road and Borthwood Lane, where the collision took place.

After crashing the car, Rose got out and jumped over a fence, but was arrested later after a police search of the area.

Appearing at Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, Rose admitted driving while disqualified and with no insurance and failing to stop for police.

He also admitted to driving while disqualified and with no insurance on a previous occasion, when he was spotted on CCTV driving onto a Wightlink ferry.

Initially, he was charged with taking a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and theft of a motor vehicle, but these charges were dropped as there was no evidence to say he took the vehicles.

Rose said he borrowed the cars and thought the person who lent him them was the lawful owner.

The offences occurred while on licence for a previous conviction.

Magistrates sentenced Rose to four months imprisonment and a 20 month driving ban.
