MUSICIANS from the West Wight joined forces to help raise more than £2,000 for charity.

Freshwater Memorial Hall was packed for the benefit concert for Uzima in our Hands, an Isle of Wight charity that supports an orphan and daycare centre in Western Kenya.

Organiser Ann Fraser said: "It was fantastic. So many people turned up to support us and the hall was standing room only.

"The acts were brilliant and the audience were up dancing in front of the stage. Everyone was saying afterwards how much they enjoyed the evening.

"We made an incredible £2,033, plus some additional donations and proceeds from the sale of items of Masai crafts."

Several Island supporters have visited Uzima over the last few years. Three who have been there this year, Joy Mowle, George Collins and Vivienne Collins, talked to the audience about their Uzima experiences with accompanying films and slides.

Compere was Michael Grist who entertained with some jokes and also sang two Elton John numbers.

There were performances from the Brighstone Barnacles, Paul Armfield, Bay Wailers, The Accelerators and Millie Luter, who sang two operatic soprano classical songs.

The grand finale had everyone on stage singing Stand By Me.
