A SHANKLIN man who moved his car, thinking he was on private land, was caught by police for drink driving.

Wayne Anthony Clift, 58, of Salem Road, was stopped at Louis Road, Lake, on May 5, when police turned up to enquire about another matter.

Clift was in a car, and smelt of alcohol, Island magistrates heard today (21).

Clift admitted driving with an alcohol reading of 61 microgrammes in his breath, when the legal limit is 35.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said Clift told police he was only moving the Vauxhall Meriva out of the way at the rear of two houses, to make room for another car.

She said there was no suggestion his driving was at fault.

Clift, defending himself, said: "I thought I was on private land. I have had a clean driving licence for 40 years and I would never have driven on the road."

He was disqualified from driving for 17 months, fined £400, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £40 surcharge.
