CYCLISTS should dismount and car drivers should abide by the restrictions on Cowes High Street.

That is the message from Cowes Town Council, which was supported by the police as members of SpeedWatch distributed flyers recently, giving details of the prohibition of driving order in Cowes town centre.

Flyers were handed out to members of the public at the junctions of Shooters Hill and Birmingham Road, and the High Street and Carvel Lane, providing details of the restrictions, which have been in place since October 2017.

It served as a reminder of how the road should be used, to prevent the likelihood of any danger to people using the pedestrian area.

The council said: "All we ask is that cyclists dismount and walk the bike through the pedestrian area.

"Signage on display at each of the junctions provide full details of the hours of the prohibition.

"Members of the public are reminded that vehicles are only permitted to use the High Street between 7am and 10am daily, except for access to off-street premises.

"If you are caught in breach of this restriction you could receive a fixed penalty of £50."
