A MOTHER admitted drink driving while her children were in the car, Island magistrates heard on Tuesday.

Lindsay Collins, 40, of Perowne Way, was more than three times the legal limit.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said mental health services had been called to Collins' home following concerns.

The court heard that since a personal tragedy, Collins had turned to drink and started self-harming.

On March 17, she took her children, put them in her white Range Rover, and drove down the road before stopping.

She later told police she had to get away from her husband.

Oscar Vincent, for Collins, said she called the police herself and fully admitted driving the car.

The court heard that she had drunk three bottles of prosecco. The alcohol in her breath was 123 microgrammes when the legal limit is 35.

Mr Vincent said: "She felt she had to remove herself and her children away from the property. The car was driven a really short distance, no more than 500m.

"She called the police and waited for them to arrive. She was placed in the cells overnight which was a traumatic experience for her."

He said Collins was fully engaging with Inclusion, the IW's drug and alcohol support service.

Sentencing was adjourned to June 4, for pre-sentence reports, but an interim driving ban was imposed.
