PROPOSED new toilets at Freshwater Bay have been put on hold until the parish council has been involved in more talks to decide whether to rebuild or refurbish them.

The parish council has already had quotes for both options ranging from £60,000 to £100,000.

Chairman Gill Kennett said: "Our deputy clerk, Emma Carter, is to report with a small working party over the next couple of months and come back with its findings.

"We will have to take over the toilets from the IW Council but there is a clause in the lease which says they can claim them back at any time. Nothing will be signed off until this clause has been sorted.

"We will also be having a usage survey done on the toilets. They are obviously in demand when we have events here like Walk the Wight and during the summer.

"There are four ladies toilets and four men's urinals with three cubicles, but if they were rebuilt we would like to include disabled and baby changing facilities.

"The current urinals are an American design which people do like, but they use a phenomenal amount of water when flushing so they are not environmentally friendly.

"We have also visited Shanklin, where they have had awards for their public toilets. But we have to make the right choice, so nothing has been decided."
