A SCHEME to rebuild and resurface a Sandown road has been delayed — after contractors found the ground was unstable.

Fitzroy Street was due to be closed for ten weeks, from April 8, as part of a project to reconstruct and resurface the carriageway.

The work was designed to strengthen weak foundations, which have historically caused road surfaces to deteriorate.

An Island Roads spokesperson said: “Unfortunately work on the scheme to rebuild and resurface Fitzroy Street has been delayed as we have encountered particularly unstable ground conditions.

“We are exploring a solution and hope to restart work as soon as this approach is finalised.

“We would like to apologise to residents for this delay and to thank them for their ongoing understanding.”

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the works.
