SHANKLIN'S beaches have been named among the best in the country.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy will this year present more than 200 awards to England's very best beaches, including those looked after by Shanklin Town Council.

The list includes popular holiday spots to more secluded beaches.

Seventy-one international blue flags and 137 seaside awards will be presented, with 52 beaches achieving both awards.

All have been judged as clean and safe. They meet the highest environmental standards and international bathing water quality standards.

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “The success of the beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches.

“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international blue flag or seaside award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”

Shanklin mayor, Cllr Steve Knight, said: "We are delighted to receive this prestigious award again, and it reflects the work and efforts of all involved – thank you all."
