AN EVENING which brought together the Romanian and Moldovan communities raised more than £650 for charity.

Around 70 people attended the MAD-Aid (Make a Difference, Medical Aid delivered) event held at La Cucina Restaurant in Yarmouth, which is owned by Costa Balan and Cosmin Irizea, who are from Romania.

MAD-Aid was founded by Victoria Dunford six years ago. It recycles medical equipment, which would otherwise be thrown out, by sending it to Romania and Moldova.

The evening was organised by Lilia Plamadeala, a MAD-Aid volunteer.

Victoria said: "It helped to connect the Romanian and Moldova community and also celebrated the Orthodox Easter. Costa and Cosmin donated £515 from their takings and we also raised another £152 through a raffle.

"The money will allow us to collect, refurbish and send 20 wheelchairs from the Island to Moldova, where they will be donated to children and adults with special needs, some of whom have never seen the sun, only because the lack of a wheelchair.

"We are a very small community and are grateful that our countrymen can open successful businesses and contribute to the Island economy, creating jobs and providing an amazing service.

"Their donation to our programme is greatly appreciated and will 'Make a Difference' in people's lives."

Costa and Cosmin recently opened a new car wash, coffee shop and launderette in Totland.
