WEARING headphones at a gig isn't usually encouraged but, at Battle of the Decades, it's a necessity.

Hosted by Platform One College of Music students, the silent disco night will be held at Strings Bar and Venue on Friday — the latest in a series of increasingly popular decade-themed club night at the Newport venue.

Three DJs will compete to win over the audience with popular songs from the 1980s, '90s and '00s.

Attendees will receive a pair of wireless headphones on entry, and will then choose which decade they want to listen to by switching the channel on their headset.

Each DJ will be trying to play the best tunes from each decade in the hope the audience will join them.

Platform One degree lecturer Andy Booth praised the students' efforts to host an alternative type of live music event.

"Silent discos are certainly growing in popularity and our students were encouraged to try something different," he said.

"It is evident decade-inspired nights are still enjoyed by a wide demographic and we hope those that have never been to a silent disco will come and give it a try."

Leo Dyke, a first year degree student at Platform One, said: "We are all really excited to present our Battle of The Decades event and we hope to bring something fresh to one of the Island’s favourite venues."

Audience members are also encouraged to dress up as their favourite decade to be in with a chance of winning a prize.

Tickets are available on the door or in advance from Strings, Platform One and online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/battle-of-the-decades.

Doors open at 7:30pm.
