FEARS that a broken-down fishing boat could drift into a Solent shipping lane gave extra urgency to a Cowes RNLI lifeboat call-out this morning (Saturday).

The 20 foot fishing boat, with a man and woman on board, suffered engine failure south of Bramble Bank while apparently on passage from Southampton to East Cowes.

With a north-easterly Force 5/6 blowing at the time, Cowes lifeboat raced through the choppy seas after launching at 10.50am.

A member of the lifeboat’s crew was put aboard the fishing boat, which was then towed to East Cowes Marina.

There, the fishing boat was met by coastguards from Bembridge.

The lifeboat returned to station at 11.55am.
