A HISTORY of violence saw a Ryde man jailed for his latest offences, which including beating up his girlfriend.

Adam Grist, 48, of Riboleau Street, Ryde, was sent to prison for a total of 26 months at the IW Crown Court last Tuesday — 16 months for two offences of actual bodily harm on another man, and ten months for two offences of actual bodily harm on his partner.

He also admitted two breaches of a non-molestation order, which had been put in place to keep his partner safe.

The court heard that his girlfriend went to St Mary's Hospital on August 9, 2018, and told staff her partner had caused her injuries. She had broken ribs and bruising to her face.

He was in breach of a non-molestation order but he said his partner had gone to his address.

Gary Venturi, prosecuting, said Grist told police he had simply pushed her away and said he was not aware he had caused any injuries.

He was bailed to his father's address in Surrey but on September 5, 2018, police were called by worried neighbours, and they found Grist's girlfriend there, again having been assaulted.

Although she had travelled to Surrey to be with him, despite the non-molestation order, she was heard by neighbours asking to be allowed to go home, and was found by police hiding under a duvet having been assaulted by Grist.

Adam Norris, for Grist, said he described his girlfriend as a 'little dynamo' when angry, and she wouldn't back down. He said: "One could say there's provocative behaviour, then he over-reacts. He does not handle that sort of thing particularly well."

The court heard that in the assault against the male victim, he had not only been assaulted, but there had been 'a degree of degradation'.

Grist was sentenced to 26 months in custody, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

He was given an indefinite restraining order to keep him away from his partner.

Outstanding matters were left to lie on file.
