NEWPORT Football Club's Easter Monday home match at St George's Park against Alton this afternoon has been called off at the 11th hour.

Alton contacted the Isle of Wight club this morning (Monday) to say they could not raise a side for the Sydenhams Wessex League match.

This is the second time this season Alton have been unable to raise a team to play away at Newport this season.

Club spokesman, Pete Westhorpe, said: "We await the Sydenham Wessex League management's decision as to whether the match will actually take place at another time or not.

"This is a disappointing way for our league season to come to an end, particularly as today was a date suggested by Alton themselves following the postponed match in March, when they also couldn’t raise a side."
