ROYAL Navy bomb disposal experts were called to the Isle of Wight today (Wednesday) after a potentially explosive device was found.

The suspected ordnance was spotted just below the cliff path between Chale and Whale Chine, and a cordon was quickly established by the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT).

The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team arrived shortly after 1pm to examine the shell and make sure it was not dangerous.

Needles CRT and bomb disposal team members then headed to Brook beach to look for another piece of ordnance.

They used a metal detector to find the object, which was not ordnance after all.

A CRT spokesperson said: "In a coastal emergency call the coastguard on 999."
