As the Bank Holiday approaches, Islanders are reminded to consider their healthcare options if they are feeling unwell.

Dr Michele Legg, clinical chair at the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said NHS staff and services often came under a lot of pressure during holidays and the St Mary's Hospital A&E department should only be used by those who faced a life-threatening emergency.

She said: “We know it can be difficult to know what to do for the best when you need NHS help but there are plenty of options.

“If you fall ill, and it is not a life-threatening emergency, the local pharmacy or your GP surgery are great first options.

"Pharmacists can help with a number of minor illnesses and most even offer a private consultation room.

"And your surgery may be able to offer you a same-day urgent appointment. Just be sure to double check opening times before you go.

“If you are unsure and would like some advice, try NHS 111 — you can call the free phone number 24/7 or contact them online, it’s a great convenience, and call handlers can direct you to a relevant clinical professional where necessary.”

Many common illnesses can be treated in the comfort of your own home; there is a lot of information and guidance available online.
