FOLLOWING the fatal bus crash on Forest Road yesterday (Sunday), a petition has been launched to install traffic lights at the site of the crash.

The crash, involving two cars and a bus, took place at the cross roads with Betty Haunt Lane and Whitehouse Road, between Shalfleet and Newport.

A woman in her 60s died in the crash. She was travelling in a red Fiat Bravo and three other people in the car are also in a serious condition in hospital.

The driver of the bus, a man in his 50s, is also said to have sustained a serious injury.

Around 20 people in total were taken to hospital following the crash.

Those who could walk were helped from the vehicles by emergency staff, while firefighters from across the Island cut those who were trapped from the vehicles.

Multiple air ambulances were called to the scene from surrounding counties.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to get in touch.

Campaigners are urging the Isle of Wight Council to install traffic lights at the cross roads.

A petition was launched yesterday.

UPDATE 12:30

The Isle of Wight Council has responded to the petition.

A spokesperson said: "The council understands public concern about what has happened at Forest Road and expresses its sympathies to all those who have been affected.

"Relevant Island agencies and the police are still investigating the causes of this incident and, until they have completed their work, it is inappropriate to comment further.

"In general terms, any decision by the council to implement road safety measures is something that would be only done following the advice and input of those relevant agencies and experts after a thorough investigation of the circumstances of what happened.

"The council hopes the public will understand this cannot be done immediately."
