RYDE Academy students took part in the annual Race for the Line rocket-powered car race day.

Each year, students in Year 7 design, build and race rocket-powered foam cars in an attempt to be the fastest in the country.

Following last year's event, a group of academy teachers trained to become rocket specialists.

Design technology teacher, Jon Dalimore, and maths teacher, Alastair Nye, are the academy’s trusted rocketeers and are now qualified to run the races.

The team results are for the best times over the 25-metre distance were, in first place, The Hashcrowns (1.35 seconds), in second place, Sonic Flash (1.4 seconds), and in third place, Pew Pew Pew (1.56 seconds).

The races are aimed at introducing STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects to Year 7 students, as they learn about the engineering behind designing cars that are fast enough to win races, but robust enough to withstand the speed at which they travel.

They must also develop a precision timing solution to measure the performance of their cars.

Last year, the fastest Ryde Academy team made it through to the regional finals, which were held at the Royal Naval base in Portsmouth.
