A MOTORCYCLIST who crashed his bike on Carisbrooke Road ended up in court after he was found to be drink driving.

Greg Galpin, 26, of Nelson Road, Newport, admitted a charge of drink driving as he appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court this morning (Friday).

Police were called out in the early hours of the morning on February 18 to the scene of a motorcycle crash on Carisbrooke Road, prosecutor Vivian Ducie told the court.

Galpin was quite badly injured and had to be taken to hospital, Mr Ducie said.

No one else was involved in the incident and the only damage done was to himself and his motorcycle.

He made full admissions to police, co-operated and apologised for his actions, Mr Ducie added.

For Galpin, Keith Verrinder said his client had been at his girlfriend's house on the night in question and intended to stay the night there, but when he received a phone call with some distressing news about his father's health, he decided to take a ride on his motorcycle to clear his head.

Galpin didn't think he had drunk too much, Mr Verrinder added.

Magistrates fined Galpin £120 and banned him from driving for 16 months.

He will also have to pay a £30 surcharge and £85 court costs.
