A COUPLE from St Helens have received a Christmas card more than three months late after the card was mistakenly sent to St Helena, a remote volcanic Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The card was sent by friends in Wroxall, just ten miles away, but instead was redirected half way around the world and ended up travelling around 10,000 miles.

The Christmas card arrived with Roger and Margaret Curtis yesterday (Wednesday).

A message, stamped on the envelope, declared: "Missent to St Helena."

St Helena is one of the most remote islands in the world, and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502.

It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

Napoleon Bonaparte was sent there in 1815 in exile by the British and died there just under six years later.
