A BURGLAR who left blood at the scene was traced through his DNA.

Timothy Andrew Young, a bricklayer and builder of Spring Gardens, Ventnor, denied burgling Ventnor's Hambrough Hotel in September 2018.

Island magistrates found him guilty following a trial on Tuesday, April 2.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said the hotel was broken into overnight, with the burglar entering an office through a window and stealing £250 cash.

Blood was left on the window frame and this was linked to Young.

Mrs Smout said: "He has an explanation which is implausible. Effectively he left his DNA there and there is no other explanation than that he was the burglar."

Young said he saw two masked men going into the building so he followed them to see what they were doing, although he denied going inside.

He said they were up to no good and one of them punched him in the face, leaving him with a black eye.

Mrs Smout said: "This is a complete pack of lies. You have come up with a story that was totally invented and keeps changing."

Keith Verrinder, representing Young, said there was no evidence Young entered the building, and no fingerprints or footprints left behind.

Young, 51, will be sentenced at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday, April 26.
