A 'KNOWN shoplifter' swore at police as she was apprehended for stealing two bottles of prosecco, Island magistrates heard on Tuesday.

Shannon Poppy Rhiannon Taylor, 21, of South Road, Cowes, admitted using threatening words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and theft from Marks and Spencer in Cowes, on March 11.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said a policeman heard breaking glass and saw Taylor walking around with a bottle of prosecco that matched one smashed on the ground. He recognised her as a known shoplifter, and she swore at him.

Keith Verrinder, for Taylor, said she had been drinking earlier in the day and had no memory of committing the offences.

In interview she apologised and said she was embarrassed, and she asked Mr Verrinder to tell the court she "wasn't all bad" and was about to start a paid apprenticeship.

Dawn Young, of the probation service, said Taylor presented as chaotic and her compliance with a current order had not been good.

She was still under a 12-week curfew for common assault and battery.

Magistrates told Taylor to stop getting drunk to excess.

They fined her £80, and ordered her to pay £20 compensation, £85 costs and a £30 surcharge.
