MEMORY loss following an accident in the 1970s led to an Atherfield man forgetting to respond to a letter about a recent speeding fine.

It led to a court appearance and driving ban for Richard Downes, 74, when he appeared in front of Island magistrates on Tuesday.

Downes admitted failing to give information relating to the driver of a Ford vehicle when required.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said Downes was recorded on a speed camera at Fairlee Road, Newport, on July 22, doing 42mph in a 30mph limit area.

A letter was sent to his Military Road home, but Downes gave no response.

Representing himself in court, Downes said he had an accident in the 1970s and had suffered memory problems ever since, which was compounded by his age.

He said: " I forget to deal with things. I have forgotten a lot of things in my life to my own personal detriment."

Magistrates gave him the mandatory six points on his licence for the offence, but he already had six points, which totted up to a disqualification.

He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined £120, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge.
