A MAN who stole three Yankee Candles from Boots in Newport has been ordered to pay the money back.

Paul Daniel Matthew Smart, who is currently in HMP Isle of Wight on a 24-week sentence for failing to comply with conditions of the Sex Offenders' Register, admitted to the theft over video link to the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court today (April 2).

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said Smart was captured on CCTV putting the candles in a bag on February 14, and leaving the store, making no attempt to pay. He was then taken into custody on the unrelated offence, on March 4.

Keith Verrinder, for Smart, said at the time of the theft he didn't have anywhere to live, so he stole the candles and used the money he made through selling them, to buy food.

Smart, 32, was ordered to pay compensation of £40.96, to be resolved once he is out of prison.
