The musical, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice, is being performed at Ventnor Winter Gardens.

Following their sell-out run of Cats last May, the theatre group is delighted to be performing Jesus Christ Superstar, which tells the story of the last days leading up to Jesus's crucifixion, from the perspective of Judas Iscariot.

The theme deals with fame and how popularity can deceive and corrupt, and how Jesus became too popular, akin to a superstar.

Jeanie Brown, director, is excited to be back directing again for Ventnor Theatre Group.

She said: "It was Cats that got me all enthused again, and when I found out that Jesus Christ Superstar was available for licensed production, I just couldn't resist. It's my favourite Andrew Lloyd Webber musical — well, it's actually a rock opera."

Jeanie said the audience will be impressed with the costuming for the show, and the custom set.

Gillian Cartwright School of Dance are providing a full dance ensemble, plus choreography for the wider cast.

Jeanie added: "I am planning on a slightly different direction for the show while retaining and building on its original setting and musical score."

Jesus is played by Nathan Meller, Judas by Steve Jones, Mary by Jess Rann, and Herod by Joe Plumb. The cast will be performing alongside a ten-piece live orchestra.

The show is being performed over two weekends — April 26 and 27, and May 3 and 4, with an extra matinee on Sunday, May 5.

Tickets are available online from jcsiw.co.uk or Ventnor Winter Gardens.
