MORE than £11.5 million has been cut from Isle of Wight school budgets in the last four years.

Analysis from the School Cuts Coalition shows 42 out of 43 Island schools have seen their budget cut, with some larger secondary schools indicating a loss of more than £1 million.

More than 93 per cent of schools on the Isle of Wight have been affected by the cuts — higher than the national average of 91 per cent.

The only schools that have not seen their funding cut are the Isle of Wight Studio School, which is closing this summer, Brighstone CE Primary and Summerfields Primary School, Newport.

All Saint’s CE Primary School, Freshwater, which is under threat of closure due to falling student numbers in the West Wight, has missed out on £95,671 in funding since 2015.

Medina College has had the largest shortfall of any school on the Isle of Wight, missing out on £689,647 annually.

On average, schools have lost £316 per pupil, per year.

Isle of Wight National Education Union joint secretary Peter Shreeve said: “This is an intolerable situation. Children and young people are being short changed by a government that believes their education can be run on a shoe string budget.

“As a result of the government’s absolute refusal to accept the fact that a school funding crisis exists, school class sizes are increasing, teachers and support staff are being reduced, building repairs are being left undone, subjects are being dropped from the curriculum and teachers are continuing to subsidise out of their own pocket for items such as text books and glues sticks.

“A lack of funding is impacting on all schools – irrelevant of size.

“This situation cannot go on. There needs to be a reversal of cuts to school budgets since 2010, and for the funding of schools and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision to be of a level that ensures all children and young people get the education they deserve, regardless of where they live.”
