A TEENAGER who took his father's car without permission and drove it while drunk found himself in front of Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Christopher Wilson, 19, of Sherbourne Avenue, Ryde, admitted drink driving, taking a motor vehicle without consent, and driving without insurance or a valid licence.

A police vehicle was driving on Park Road in Ryde when the defendant, driving a Vauxhall Mokka SUV, pulled out in front of it, prosecutor Ann Smout told the court.

A breath test was carried out, which showed Wilson was over the limit, and when vehicle checks were carried out, police discovered Wilson was not insured to drive the car and only had a provisional licence.

In police interview, Wilson said he had been at a pub watching rugby and drinking cider and admitted that his father had not given him permission to use the vehicle.

For Wilson, Liz Miller told the court that he had been at the pub with his girlfriend and was taking her home, but she only lived a short distance and he would normally have walked.

"He doesn't know why he drove that night. He knows he is in the wrong," Ms Miller told the court.

Magistrates banned Wilson from driving for 16 months, fined him £230 and endorsed his licence.

Wilson will also have to pay £85 court costs and a £30 surcharge.
