USING abusive, homophobic language after being arrested saw an extra charge added to a homeless man's indictment, as he appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Aston Williams, 29, of no fixed abode, was arrested for possession of cannabis, but when he was being transported in a police vehicle, he became extremely abusive to officer PC Pointing, prosecutor Vivian Ducie told the court.

PC Pointing was deeply offended and another officer was also on the receiving end of abusive language.

Williams admitted both a charge of possession and a charge of using abusive words.

For Williams, Barry Arnett told the court that his client wished him to express his apologies.

"He is disgusted with the comments he made," Mr Arnett said.

Williams has been referred for counselling for severe anxiety and depression and self medicates by smoking cannabis, Mr Arnett added.

A probation officer told the court that Williams had suffered several bereavements that have contributed to his poor mental health.

Magistrates sentenced Williams to a community order with 20 rehabilitation days and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to PC Pointing.
