BRANDISHING a bottle at a police officer landed a Ryde man in court.

Alex Nolan, 31, of Harding Road, admitted a charge of common assault on an emergency worker when he appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Nolan called police to an incident at his address on March 5 and when officers arrived, they found him in an agitated state, Vivian Ducie, prosecuting, told the court.

Mr Ducie told the court the officers followed him inside and he picked up a bottle in the kitchen and said to one of the officers: "What are you going to do?"

Police threatened to discharge a Taser, at which point Nolan put the bottle down and he was arrested.

The assault charge comes from the threat, no injuries were caused, Mr Ducie added.

For Nolan, Barry Arnett said that his client called police with allegations that he had been assaulted.

Mr Arnett added that Nolan was a hard working married man with four children and had not troubled the courts for more than five years.

Magistrates fined Nolan £253. He will also have to pay a £30 surcharge and £85 court costs.
