AN Isle of Wight driving instructor has spoken out about the state of driving on the Island, following a video that has been circulated widely on social media.

The shocking video shows the moment a driver nearly caused a serious head-on collision while trying to overtake on an Isle of Wight road.

Police are investigating the incident, after receiving multiple reports of dangerous driving on the A3054 at Quarr Hill.

Driving instructor Les Means said: “I see that kind of thing every single day — people overtaking at the most stupid places.

“As instructors, my colleagues and I have to use our dual controls all the time, because we are put in the position that van was in.

“We have to put our foot on the brake, grab the steering wheel or take some kind of action because other drivers are acting aggressively.

“It is socially unacceptable to drive under the influence of alcohol, it is socially unacceptable to be on your phone while driving, but for some reason it is acceptable to break the speed limit.

“Soon, someone will have a bad crash. People will slow down for a few months after and then they will go back to speeding.

“Speeding seems to be acceptable to a lot of people.

“Drivers are always telling me the same thing — if they drive within the speed limit, they are abused by other drivers who tailgate and overtake them dangerously.

“If you are driving 30mph in a 30mph zone, people are on your back. It is happening all over the IW.

“Driving like this might save you five minutes off your journey, but is it really worth the risk of killing yourself or other people over five minutes?”
