MYSTERY surrounds the sighting of a dead deer on Compton Beach.

Dog walkers made the discovery yesterday evening (Wednesday).

How the large mammal ended up on the beach is unclear.

Cattle have been known to fall from the cliffs above in the past.

Deer are known to swim in the sea, meaning it could have washed up on the beach from elsewhere.

A spokesperson for the National Trust said that most likely the came from Dorset, where it would have died and got washed across in the sea.

Retrieval of dead animals is the responsibility of the land owner, but the beach at Compton is the property of the Crown Estate, for which there is no representative on the Island.
