AFTER a goalless first half, Newport turned on the style in the second to follow on from last week's good win with an impressive 4-0 victory over struggling Folland Sports in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League yesterday (Sunday).

On 50 minutes, Newport led with a goal by Connor Kelly after good box-to-box work by Ryan Hughes.

After a Folland player was red-carded for a bad challenge, Newport added further strikes by Lewis Wright, Kelly again and top scorer, Jared Wetherick.

In the same division, East Cowes Vics let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 with mid-table Laverstock and Ford at Beatrice Avenue.

Elias Ahmed gave Vics the lead on 28 minutes and that's how it stayed until half-time.

Joe Butcher added the second to double Vics' advantage, but they allowed Laverstock to come back and level.

Cowes Sports remain third bottom of the Sydenhams Wessex Premier after they lost 2-0 to unbeaten league leaders, Sholing, at Westwood Park.

After the game, the Yachtsmen's player-boss John McKie said: "It was hard one to take. It was a strange game.

"It was like a graveyard out there for both sides and felt like a pre-season game in the first 45 minutes.

"We created chances in the first half and kept them at bay comfortably, but if you don't take your chances in games like this against the top teams, you get punished - and that's what happened.

"The second half was more open and I think, to be fair to Sholing, even they didn't really get out of second gear - but they had the quality to get the two goals needed for the win.

"I'm disappointed as we want to keep the points coming in, but we will learn from this and look to next week's game away to Tadley Calleva to try to get another vital three points."

In the semi-finals of the Isle of Wight County Press Challenge Cup, Shanklin's 5-1 home loss to Cowes Sports Reserves was the shock result of the day, while it was business as usual for Whitecroft & Barton Sports, who stuffed Pan Sports 8-1.

Division 2's match of the day was a close and entertaining match between Newchurch and Wootton at Watery Lane, which ended 1-1 - a game with plenty of drama, which included a sending off and a penalty miss.
