THERE were thrills and spills as 'Superwoman' won the prestigious Shrove Tuesday Pancake Trophy in Yarmouth during the town's annual Pancake Races involving the whole school.

Will Neville-Smith, of the Royal Solent Yacht Club, flew to victory in his 'Superwoman' costume leaving two participants nursing injuries in his wake in the race for pubs and businesses.

He had to rescue his aunt's dog when it slipped its lead while racing and started eating pancakes.

Chemist Tim Gibbs, a previous winner, fell and sprained his ankle, while Yarmouth Carnival Committee Chairman pulled up with a hamstring injury.

Among the highlights was the opening race for Pre-school Girls where the competitors failed to run around course marker 'Mustapha Pancake' (Mike Grinstead) and his Union Flag and instead headed towards the Pier while being chased by parents and teachers.

While dogs also took part in the Men's Adult Race but were more interested in clearing up the dropped pancakes rather than competing.

Around 100 children from Yarmouth School took part in the event, organised by the Yarmouth Carnival Committee.

Yarmouth PTFA had a cake stall outside the Town Hall with hot drinks inside and The George Hotel provided pancakes with all money going to the school building fund. Anne Kyle was Master of Ceremonies.
