TWO Isle of Wight teachers are taking on the music business.

Former teacher Rob Thompson and Isle of Wight College lecturer Phil Truckel — both musicians with experience in the theatre, media, broadcasting and event management — have launched a new record label, Slingshot Records.

They will hold a launch event next Friday (March 15) at Strings Bar and Venue, Newport, featuring Isle of Wight folk rockers Slombers Woke and singer songwriter John Wroath.

Rob said: "We are looking to support a variety of talent in progressing their careers in much the same way that we do or have done with individuals in teaching or teaching careers.

"Like with teaching, it’s not about us as teachers, it’s always about supporting and nurturing those we work with — helping our students, and now musicians, realise their potential.

"If we can use our skills and experience in progressing their careers whilst they concentrate on being creative, then our job will be done."

Initially, Slingshot was representing three acts — Slombers Woke, who have just released their new album, Somewhen, young grunge band Bluest Boy and world dance music act Arcane.

But the label has already branched out by producing a theatre soundtrack with artist collective Nash Van Drake.

Phil said: "We’re very keen to break into the soundtrack sector of TV and film and this project is the start of that ambition."

Tickets for the launch event are available at www.seetickets.com and Strings.
