ISLAND distance runners Charlie Metcalfe and Trish Train have both been selected to represent England in their respective age groups in the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k.

Both athletes qualified with excellent runs in the Chichester 10k race this month and by running faster than the England Athletics qualifying times.

This is the second England vest for Charlie, of Ryde Harriers, after she won her age group running against the other home nations in the Chester Marathon in September.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Charlie Metcalfe, of Ryde Harriers, won her second England vest.

Her run in Chichester places her fifth in the UK and well inside the W40-44 time of 41min 15secs.

Trish, a member of the IW Road Runners, was three minutes inside the qualifying time in the W50-54 group (42.12) to secure her place.

She is 15th best in the UK in her age group.

The postal worker is now planning to run the Fleet Half Marathon in March.

Both athletes will be joined by eight other runners in their age group from around the UK when they take on Scotland, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in Birmingham.

Two weeks ago, Charlie ran 82 miles, which included a tough track session, a 20-mile day and winning the IW Cross Country Championships.

After competing for England in Birmingham, she will then focus on the Island Games in Gibraltar this summer, then attempt to lower her marathon time in an autumn race.
