FOLLOWING reports of inadequate procedures and safety lapses at zoos around the country, the chief executive of the Isle of Wight Zoo has spoken of the attraction's successful inspection.

According to the i, inspection reports show the Isle of Wight Zoo was told last year about concerns over securing the closure cables on large carnivore enclosures.

But chief executive of the Isle of Wight Zoo, Veronica Chrisp, said the condition was an extra precautionary measure which they had resolved within six months of the inspection.

According to Ms Chrisp, the rest of the inspection was positive and the zoo was left with no other conditions.

She said: "We actually had a very good inspection. We were really pleased with the zoo. The whole point of an inspection is to pick things up and resolve them."

It was also specified inspectors were worried an intruder could break into the part of the enclosure where the door opening is and let the animals out — not that the animals could escape themselves.
