A SECOND dead sea mammal has been washed up on an Island beach over the weekend.

The Harbour Porpoise was discovered on Brook Beach after a dolphin was found on Whale Chine, Chale, last week.

Stephan Voigt, Isle of Wight British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) Area Coordinator and Marine Mammal Medic, confirmed the find.

He said: "Unfortunately, in most cases, this is down to the weather and currents off the Island at this time of the year.

"Many dolphins and porpoises can find themselves stranded. It is also an area where there is a lot of rubbish being washed up on the beaches and they find themselves entangled in netting and other pollution.

"The porpoise was a juvenile so it may have been looking for food. If an area has been overfished then they have to take more risks to compete to stay alive. It's a vicious circle.

"We work closely with the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme and they will come over to the Island and will collect the carcass and do a post mortem to discover the cause of death. However, in this case, I think it had been there too long."
