A GAS leak has led to the closure of Yarmouth High Street today (Monday 18).

The County Press understands workmen installing iron railings have cut through the gas pipes. SGN is at the scene, making it safe.

The road has been closed, although it is still accessible for pedestrians. Ruth Gardner is the owner of The Blue Crab, which is near the gas leak. She said: "It happened this morning at about 11am and it is a major leak for this tiny road. There is a smell of gas outside but not inside.

"We are still open for business and the pavement along one side of the High Street is also open."

UPDATED 4pm:

A statement from SGN said: "Our engineers were called to a property in High Street, Yarmouth, earlier today after a gas service pipe was damaged by a third party.

"For everyone’s safety, we’ve needed to evacuate three properties while we work to repair the damaged pipe. We also need to close High Street between its junctions with South Street and St James’ Square. Signed diversions will be in place for motorists.

"It's too early to say at this stage how long our repairs will take, but we're doing all we can to complete our work as quickly and safely as possible."
