CHOREOGRAPHY, characterisation and costume all combined to create a spellbinding Isle Dance competition last week.

The dance competition was enjoyed by 330 children, from eleven Island primary schools, who performed in front of sold-out audiences at Medina Theatre last Monday and Tuesday.

The competition was jointly organised by Gurnard Primary School and The Starlight Boutique to provide an opportunity for Isle of Wight pupils to showcase their talents on a professional stage in front of an audience.

A panel of professional actors and dancers judged the choreography, performance skill, drama, concept, costume, hair and make-up and soundtrack for each performance.

On the first night, the winner was Carisbrooke CE Primary School with their dance Night at the Museum. The judges loved the concept behind the dance, the variety of dance styles and the use of musicality.

Katherine Marshall, executive headteacher of Carisbrooke CE and Newport CE primaries, said: "Isle Dance 2019 was a superb creative experience for each and every child who took part. It was such a joyful event which gave every child, not only a performing arts experience, but also a real confidence boost."

The winner on the second night was Gurnard Primary School with The Magic Lamp. The judges said it was a bright and thrilling performance with fabulous choreography, very good characterisation and great energy from the whole cast throughout.

Organiser Vanessa Hicks, headteacher of Gurnard Primary School, said: "It was fantastic to see so much talent from Island schools on one stage – they made their families and schools very proud.

"The standard of performance from all of the children taking part really was exceptional. It was a wonderful experience and we're already looking forward to next year's competition."
