LOVERS of the East Cowes Umbrella Tree gathered around the natural landmark in another effort to save it yesterday evening (Thursday).

The tree faces being chopped down after it was found to be diseased, but campaigners hope it can be saved.

The Friends of the Umbrella Tree decorated the tree in hearts and messages to the Isle of Wight Council and invited others to do the same.

At the event yesterday (Thursday), Simon Shelley serenaded those in attendance by the tree and the group enjoyed refreshments.

The Friends wrote to the council: "Many people hung hearts on the tree with strong messages to you, so I ask you, go and have a closer look at their labour of love."

According to councillor Karl Love, there was a positive meeting with Island Roads, Isle of Wight councillor Ian Ward and other representatives from those who love the tree.

He said today: "There is now a real chance of the tree living out its days and displaying its magnificent blooms.

"The friends of the tree have been given time to form a Community Interest Company which will take over the care and ownership of the tree.

"They will need to raise a considerable amount of funding to pay for a framework, insurance policy, maintenance and inspections."
