THE HISTORY of firefighting on the Isle of Wight will be the subject of a talk at Carisbrooke Castle Museum.

Serving fire officer, Damon Corr, will present a packed ‘fly-through’ of the history of firefighting on the Island at the museum on Tuesday, February 26, from 2pm to 4pm

‘Heroism, Humour and the Hump’ is the IW Fire Brigades Federation’s (IWFBF) offering for talks throughout 2019 for Island audiences that wish to be entertained and informed with an eclectic mix of the Island’s firefighting history.

Mr Corr will introduce the talk and his work in today’s IWFBF, before allowing the audience to pick a card from a pack of more than 50, each of which relate to a fire event or series of events that have impacted on the Island’s firefighting evolution from the time of the Roman occupation until the formation of the Island’s first county brigade in 1948.

Chronology counts for nothing as the audience randomly select the course of the presentation through which it will become apparent that whilst no Island-wide fire brigade existed before the Second World War, the otherwise disparate groups of firemen were tangibly connected socially, politically and philanthropically.

Items relating to firefighting on the IW from the Carisbrooke Castle Museum collection will also be on display for the audience to view.
