THE OLDEST resident of the Isle of Wight has turned 109.

Elsie Irene Morris celebrated her birthday with a party on Monday (11) at Newport Residential Home, where she has lived for 14 years.

She asked staff how old she was turning, and when they said 109, she replied: "That's getting on a bit isn't it? I only feel 30."

Elsie is thought to be the 32nd oldest person in the UK.

Elsie was born on February 11, 1910 at Heath Farm, Staplers — the third child of Maurice and Ada Sibbick.

In 1933, she married Douglas Morris and had two children, Sue and John.

She spent most of her life working on farms, horse riding, milking cows and tending to the other animals.

Elsie and Douglas moved to Dungewood Farm in Shorwell in 1946. Elsie lived there until she was 95 years old.

Her granddaughter Vanessa Whitewood said: "In October she was in hospital with pneumonia but she got over that. She has had it four times recently but she is very strong and very determined.

"She looks better this year than she did last year!"
