A POPULAR Ventnor pub is to have a major £280,000 refurbishment.

The Blenheim is closing after last orders on Saturday for the works by licensee Debbie Cardwell and Heineken owned Star Pubs and Bars.

The pub will be closed for five weeks and will start serving food when it reopens in the third week of March.

The pub is having a complete top to toe refurbishment to bring it up to date and give it a fresh smarter look, while retaining its traditional character.

The windows and side wall are being redecorated in a smart charcoal grey with new black, white and gold signage. A new door lantern and downlighters will complete the look.

A new courtyard garden is being created with feature barrels and stools, planters of greenery, wooden panelling and festoon lighting.

The back bar is being given a retro look, and contemporary industrial style lighting is being fitted and stoves installed in the snug and main bar to create a cosy, warm ambience.

Timber floors and new carpet are being added and all the furniture replaced. The new look will include smart leather armchairs, button back leather bench seating and upholstered chairs, as well as traditional rustic tables and chairs for drinking and dining.

A modern commercial kitchen is being added to allow the pub to offer fresh home-cooked food, such as fish and chips, pies, curries, chilli and a Sunday roast.

Debbie took over The Blenheim two years ago. She would like to add to the entertainment on offer — introducing poker, quiz and race nights and starting up pool and darts teams.

She said: "I'd always wanted to become my own boss and wondered what it would be like to run my own pub. When the opportunity came up, I took it.

"Having worked in local government for 25 years, including in consumer protection, school business management and managing the Island's tourist information centres, I had many of the skills needed.

"I am surprised how much I enjoy it. Every day is different, and it is nice to bring happiness to people, whether that is enjoying a pint or listening to music.

"With more attractive surroundings, food being on offer for the first time in many years and more happening at the pub, I hope to spread joy to more people."

Neil Convery, regional operations director for Star Pubs and Bars said: "Heineken is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing in pubs like The Blenheim to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive in their communities for years to come."
