A KITCHEN fire in a flat on Union Street, Ryde, has resulted in two engines being called out and the busy road being closed.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and residents and business owners have been evacuated.

The alarm was raised at 5.45pm.

The incident has caused problems for traffic in the area, with Southern Vectis reporting buses stuck on Union Street and disruption on routes in and out of Ryde.

Bus routes 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 towards Ryde will be unable to serve Union Street bus stop, Southern Vectis said.

Island Roads announced that Union Street was closed while emergency services deal with the fire.

A spokesperson for the fire and rescue service said firefighters from Ryde Fire Station successfully extinguished the small kitchen fire.
