THE BURNT remains of growing cannabis plants were discovered during a police investigation into a fire at a block of Newport flats, a court heard today (Tuesday).

Officers quizzed resident, Steven St John, 40, following the discovery which also included lights and other equipment associated with producing the drug.

He initially told police the equipment was to do with his photography work but later admitted he had grown the drug to help with pain relief for another man who he had sub-let a bedroom to.

Prosecuting, Ann Smout, told the court there was 'no suggestion' St John had been involved with the fire in September 2016.

She added the tenant had 'categorically denied' he had conversations with St John about using the cannabis

She said: "This is quite an old offence. It is very unusual."

The court heard St John, of previous good character, admitted producing a controlled drug.

For St John, Barry Arnett said his client, who now lives in Highland Road, Southsea, had gained a masters degree in photography.

He said: "Clearly, he did not know what he was doing."

St John was fined £40 and told to pay a £30 surcharge and £40 costs.
